LARNE Athletic Club's James McIlroy was the convincing winner of the 2012 Race Over the Glens, the traditional start to the New Year for local runners.
McIlroy finished in a time of 33:17, over a minute clear of second placed David Simpson of Corstorphine to win the event he last won back in 1998.
Promoted by Ballymena Runners, the race was held over a demanding 5.5 mile circuit on trails through Glenariff Forest Park and included some 1000 feet of climbing. A record 296 runners competed this year including almost thirty from Larne AC.
Ryan Maxwell was second finished for the club, picking up several places in the final run-in along the road to finish in 8th place, while Phelim McAllister and Bernard Brady both ran exceptionally well, finishing 10th and 13th respectively.
With six to count, Justin Maxwell (15th) and Andy Guy (26th) ensured that Larne Athletic Club retained the team prize.
Adele Neill led the Larne AC ladies home in a time of 44:12 to win the prize for 3rd Lady Overall. Geraldine Quigley was next in 46:44 with Beverley Gaston also running strongly to finish in a time of 48:04.
Thanks also to those club members and friends of Larne AC who travelled to Glenariff to give their support and encouragement on a cold Monday afternoon.
