Greenisland Ladies Hockey Club announce 1st XI Captain thumbnailGreenisland Ladies 1st Team Captain Nikki Cairns SA3647

WITH pre-season training nearing completion, Greenisland Ladies have put together the core of the 1st XI squad for the 2008-09 season.
The Club is delighted to announce Nicola Cairns as the first team Captain.
Although only 18 years old, Nikki's achievements to date are impressive. A former pupil of Carrickfergus Grammar School, Nikki heads to the University of Ulster in September to commence her degree course in Sports Studies, with her sights set upon becoming a PE teacher.
Her sporting talents are many. She was selected for the Regional Development Squad for hockey at U14 and U17, nominated CGS Player of the Year and holder of the Lynne Morrow Cup for Hockey.
These achievements have been rounded off with her captaincy of the School's successful 1st XI team. The Club plays tribute to the many hours of excellent coaching and advice given by Miss Kemp, head of the Grammar's girls' PE department.
Nikki's appointment to captaincy at such a tender age underpins the Club's policy of identifying and developing talent in young players. Indeed the average age of the Club's 1st XI has fallen to 22.
Competitive fixtures for the 1st squad commences with Winemark Shield games, the first of which is scheduled for 13 September. This competition is open to the top 20 ladies hockey clubs in Ulster. League fixtures will then get underway on 4 October.
Meanwhile, the Club's remaining four teams start their season on 20 September. Training continues at Carrickfergus Leisure Centre on Mondays and Thursdays - further details are available at www.greenislandladies.co.uk
