Two defeats leave Carrick close to drop zone thumbnailNetherlands batting during their game last week in Carrick against Guernsey.

CARRICKFERGUS Cricket Club 1st XI suffered two five wicket defeats at Middle Road at the weekend and are now looking anxiously over their shoulders as two of the teams below them picked up wins, to leave them just four points above the drop zone.
A poor performance on Saturday saw Carrick bowled out for just 84 in 33 overs against CSNI, a team also struggling at the wrong end of the table.Having been put in to bat, only Ross Gelderbloem who top scored with 27, and Michael Gilmour with 17 reached double figures as Ireland's Nigel Jones ripped through Carrick's top order, picking up 5 for 28. Two wickets each for Ryan Eagleson and Ross Gelderbloem saw the visitors slump to 17 for 4 after ten overs. However opener Gareth McKee proved immoveable and in partnerships with Coulter and Beverland, saw his side home to a 5 wicket victory in the 27th over, with an unbeaten 41 runs.
Carrickfergus 84 (R Gelderbloem 27, N Jones 5-28, J Costain 3-11)
CSNI 87/5 (G McKee 41*, C Beverland 23*, R Eagleson 2-20, R Gelderbloem 2-26)
A much better showing by Carrick on Sunday when they came within an over of pulling off a surprise win over league leaders Noerth Down. With their innings reduced to 43 overs after rain had interrupted proceedings in the 5th over, a good team effort saw them score a very respectable 182 for 9 with four batsmen getting into the twenties, Ryan Eagleson, Mikey Taiaroa, Michael Gilmour, and Danny O'Shea. With more rain arriving during the tea interval, North Down were faced with a revised target of 172 in 38 overs. They struggled to 81 for 4 off 22 overs, but in form opener Andrew Sutherland remained there and was joined by skipper Peter Shields. The pair added 75 runs in 14 overs, before Matthew Kernohan had Shields caught behind for 27. The visitors still needed 15 off the last 2 overs, but two sixes in the 37th over from Sutherland, who finished unbeaten on 84, saw them home with an over to spare.
Carrickfergus 182/9 (43 overs; R Eagleson 28, M Taiaroa 27, M Gilmour 25, D O'Shea 21, D Harding 2-31, T Khan 2-31, R Haire 2-34)
Nort Down 172/5 (37 overs; A Sutherland 84*, P Shields 27, R Haire 20, D O'Shea 2-30) Revised D/L target score 172 in 38 overs
