Have you been selected for Alan’s ‘Hall’ Stars?!

Thursday, 8 July 2010

IF NOT already started, for most clubs Pre Season training will be getting underway, and, with the round of Player of the Year Dinners now over, it will soon be time for our usual light local 'Team of the Season'. In GAA, you have your 'All Stars' team - this one is more like the 'Alan Hall-stars'! In recent years, there have been a Division 1 and Division 2 team of the year, but with Mossley Young Men, Newington Rangers and 18th Newtownabbey Old Boys all securing Intermediate status, it just left Kilroot Rec, Grange Rangers and Whitehead Eagles to make up a 'Division 2' team.
While one time we did have a local Ballymena Premier League team, comprising of only players from Ballynure Old Boys and Kilbride Swifts, I didn't it would be worthwhile compiling a separate Division 2 team this time - given that it probably would have been largely dominated by Kilroot players anyway; Rec finishing second in 2a, while Grange and Whitehead just managed to fight off relegation.
The Division 2 players of course, though, will be eligible for selection in the overall Team of the Season.
To be fair, there have been better seasons; no silverware or promotions for anyone, although at least none of our local flock got relegated.
In the Premier Division, Islandmagee finished third, one place higher than last term, although manager Steven Donald might look on it as an opportunity lost, for, surely with a deeper first team pool, and with fewer 'silly' goals conceded, that Premier Division championship would not have been beyond the Wilbourners.
