Lisburn inflict heavy defeat on Carrick
Thursday, 1 July 2010
CARRICKFERGUS Cricket Club 1st XI suffered a heavy 8 wicket defeat by Lisburn at Wallace Park on Saturday.
Carrick won the toss and batted first, and lost Andrew Cowden caught at slip in the first over. Worse was to follow as Simpson claimed the vital wickets of Mikey Taiaroa and Ross Gelderbloem in successive overs to reduce Carrick to 23 for 3 after ten overs.
Michael Gilmour, deputising as opener for the holidaying Richard Stirling, had survived the onslaught, and was joined by captain Ryan Eagleson. The pair steadied the innings and shared in a partnership of 105 runs, but were never able to dominate to accurate Lisburn bowlers, especially spinners Thompson and ran der Merve who only conceded 16 runs between the 22nd and 32nd overs.
Gilmour and Eagleson saw the hundred up in the 32nd over, and soon afterwards Gilmour completed his 50, a fine effort from the young batsman. He was finally out, by which time the Carrick total had advanced to 128. Eagleson completed his 50 right at the end of the innings, a determined effort from the Carrick skipper, but he lacked meaningful support from his lower order, and the total had advanced to a disappointing 169 for 8 after their alloted 50 overs.
With this modest total to defend, Carrick's bowlers would have to make early inroads, but ex Carrick all-rounder Ryan Ervine and youngster Adam Berry got Lisburn off to a good start, taking 48 runs off the first dozen overs.
Ross Gelderbloem bowled Ervine for 30 and soon afterwards, Berry was caught at slip by Mikey Tairaroa off Matthew Kernohan for 22, but this was to be the extent of Carrick's success.
Yasas Tillakaratre and skipper Greg Thompson eased Lisburn home in the 32nd over without further loss.
