Raymond Robinson delivers his bowl for Curran am2695
THE Curran Senior team took on high flying Lisnagarvey at Curran Park on Sat 26th June looking to keep a tight rein on the high scoring visitors.
Michael Dickey had his usual rink of Jimmy McCallister, Simon Beggs and Jim McIlwrath. As of late it was Michael's four who made all the running over the first ten ends and built up a 16 - 5 lead.
By fifteen ends the lead had increased to 23 - 7 with the visitors struggling to produce any quality bowls. With Michael's four all playing at the top of their game they finally ran out 33 - 9 winners at twenty-one ends.
A terrific performance from the Curran rink who out bowled the opposition in every position.
On rink two Darren Witherspoon's four of Eddie Duff, Rodney Newell and Chris McCullough took on the stylish Noel Graham' s four.
This was a tight contest over the opening ends with neither team able to impose themselves on the game.
At ten ends the visitors had managed to open up a three shot lead, with the score standing at 12 - 9. Some good bowling from the Curran narrowed the gap and at fifteen ends the Lisnagarvey rink lead 15 - 14.
At this point it must be said that the home side made a tactical error when they gave the jack to the opposition in order to have the last bowl. This back fired badly as the visitors lengthened the jack and the Curran rink lost the final six ends losing twenty shots in the process to run out 35 - 14 losers.
James Burns had Robert Bradley at lead, Kenny Falconer at second and Raymond Robinson at third. This was another tight encounter over the first ten ends with the Burns four leading 8 - 6.
For the next five ends the visiting skip had his back to the wall and on more than one occasion had to resort to driving at the head, successfully restricting the Curran four's scoring.
The Lisnagarvey skip's tactics were paying off and they began to gain the upper hand over Burns's four in the closing ends. This resulted in the visitors winning the final six ends to earn a convincing 28 - 14 win.
Geoff Falconers four of Nigel Todd, Ernie Culbert and Andy Thom were taken by surprise at how quickly the Lisnagarvey four settled into their stride and soon found themselves 17 - 4 down after ten ends.
Geoff and the boy's never really got to grips with the opposition and found themselves trailing 29 - 5 at fifteen ends and finally finishing up 33 - 10 losers.
Result Curran 75 (1 points) - Lisnagarvey (6 points)
The only bright point of the day was a great display from Michael Dickey's four who gained the Curran's solitary point with another magnificent win. No match for the Curran next Saturday who will travel to Portadown on Tues 6th July.
