RUGBY stars of the future paraded their skills at Greenisland last week at a mini rugby blitz hosted by Belfast High School Former Pupils (BHSFP RFC).
More than 200 children and adults descended to the playing fields at the War Memorial sports grounds on Saturday [January 23] with the hosts entertaining teams from Carrickfergus and Ballymoney.
Boys and girls aged from 6 to 11 had an enjoyable day playing competitive matches. The smaller children, or "Leprechauns", played touch rugby while the bigger children played versions of contact rugby with 8 or 10 to a team depending on their age.
The emphasis was all about fun and judging by the spirit in the way all matches were played, the kids certainly enjoyed themselves. That's not to say they are not learning how to tackle and run hard!
The bright but chilly weather added to the occasion with many parents adding vocal encouragement from the sidelines as it remained dry.
All players were well looked after at the end with hot dogs and drinks in plentiful supply. Hot drinks kept everyone warm and were supplied by parents working tirelessly behind the scenes.
Gareth Adams, head coach at BHSFP minis, was delighted with the outcome of the day. "Rugby at this stage is not about winning or losing. It's about fun and seeing how the kids develop as they get older. This is our fourth full season at Greenisland and it's great to see the improvement in the boys and girls over that time," he said.
BHSFP mini rugby is on every Saturday morning from 10.30. More information about the club can be found at www.bhsfpminirugby.org.uk. New players are welcome any time.
