THE Board of Governors, Principal, Staff and Pupils of Carrickfergus Grammar School had reason to be delighted this past week as it was that Dr Charles Herbert Gerard Gould, one of the founding fathers of the school, was awarded the MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.
Dr Gould has served on the school's Board of Governors for almost 35 years and has led it as Chairperson since 1994.
He also helped found both the Parents' Association and the Carrickfergus Grammar School Trust Fund which supports pupils who are in need of financial assistance to achieve their goals in life.
Dr Gould has offered decades of selfless support to generations of young people who have attended Carrickfergus Grammar School.
Dr Gould told the Advertiser: "I had found out a few weeks previously, and was told not to tell anyone until it was announced, but word got quite quickly because people had mentioned it to me in Church on the Sunday!"
Dr Gould said he was surprised and proud to receive the reward, and admitted that he 'loved' working at school - despite his other interests which include charity and medical work.
“It's just something I enjoy doing - I love making the prize night speech and reflecting on the work I've done through the year at school. I have also helped out with the interview techniques and helped with different events throughout the year whenever I can. Carrick Grammar is a really special school, the exam results just keep rising and rising, and we are blessed with a wonderful Headmaster who the kids love - Mr Mulvenna has been a fantastic man to work with and he's quite good craic too!", Dr Gould added.
Principal of Carrickfergus Grammar, Mr Mulvenna added: "Dr Gould is a true gentleman, he is a dignified, modest, unsung hero whose recognition brings credit to the whole Borough of Carrickfergus.
“Warmest congratulations to our pater familias - the head of our family!"
