Works will bring ‘vibrant’ town centre
Thursday, 12 January 2012
STORMONT Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has said the public realm works due to begin this month in Carrick town centre will transform the area into a 'vibrant people friendly' environment which will attract more visitors and shoppers.
Mr McCausland made the comments during a visit to the town on Monday when he saw the plans for the £2.5 million public realm scheme.
It has been estimated that the work to install new pavements and street furniture will take 11 months to complete and could lead to some disruption to the commercial life of the town centre.
Mr McCausland said: "The work about to commence in Carrickfergus town centre will provide a vibrant and uplifting contrast to the existing poor quality and deteriorating surfaces of the paths and public spaces, which were clearly evident during my visit.
“The aim of this new scheme is to create a distinctive people friendly environment using high quality stone surfaces, improved street lighting and co-ordinated street furniture, attracting more visitors and shoppers to come to the town.
