Carrick Council has ‘worst’ safety record

Thursday, 5 January 2012

CARRICKFERGUS Council has the worst health and safety record of any district council in Northern Ireland, according to figures published by the Health and Safety Executive.
Last week the Advertiser revealed that the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) was investigating how harmful bacteria got into water pipes at the Amphitheatre leisure centre, this week the spotlight falls on the Council run Sullatober Depot on Marshallstown Road.
It has emerged that safety inspectors from HSENI issued eight orders to Carrick Council in 2011 for it to improve safety practices at Sullatober which is the Council centre of operations for cleansing and parks.
The warnings, which relate to the use of machinery and control of 'hazardous substances', included six 'improvement notices' ordering the Council to comply with safety rules and two 'prohibition notices' ordering it to immediately halt work on two pieces of machinery until proper safety measures were in place.
The more severe prohibition notices required work to stop on a 'Redrock slurry tanker' because a protection guard was 'damaged' and 'did not offer protection'. Inspectors also ordered work to stop at a fuel tank because access to it was positioned two metres above ground level.
