Residents terrorised
Thursday, 1 July 2010
MEMBERS of the community in Eden who live near a bonfire site have been plagued by young people drinking and setting fires at the site.
A concerned resident, who did not want to be identified, contacted the Advertiser & Gazette to complain about the ongoing anti-social behaviour of youths in the Eden area.
“I am sending you these emails due to the drink, drugs and small fire bombs that is happening in Eden where the Bonfire site is. The fire service is out at least three times a week, we never see the PSNI, and people are living in fear of their houses going on fire. And this is four to five times per week."
“Youngsters as young as eight-years-old are with older ones who have no respect with open air drinking, drug taking, and lighting fires. It has just got so out of hand it is unreal."
Carrickfergus Inspector Tommy Mahood said: "We have had no reports of this type, however we are always happy to discuss such issues with local residents." "Myself and my colleagues can be contacted at Carrickfergus Police Station and are committed to working with community to address any issues of concern."
DPP Chairman Stewart Dickson said: "If someone is observing it (anti-social behaviour) happening then they need to report it to Carrickfergus police. Alternatively, information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity."
“I am annoyed if residents said they had reported it to the police, and the police say they have no record of these reports. If the fire service is being called out to extinguished these fires then there should be some reports.
“If any residents have reported these disturbances to the police and feel that the police are not acting on these reports then I urge the residents to contact myself or Ann Allen, the DPP manager.
Mr Dickson concluded: "It is our business to make sure complaints are acted on and if they are not to question why."
