Ski in style
Thursday, 4 August 2011
Whether you're a skiing novice or a seasoned veteran of the slopes, an off-piste expert or a family of skiing fanatics, this winter make sure you walk out onto the snow with a swagger in your step and ski in style.
So, what are the ingredients for the perfect stylish ski trip? The first thing to think about is your gear. For those who are new to the world of skiing, the sport has its own distinctive gear (and that's saying nothing about snowboarding, which is different again - but this is a topic for another article).
On a typical day skiing you are likely to encounter a few different characters as you weave your way down the slopes. For starters there's the über-cool skier; usually dressed head to toe in matt black and zipping along at hair-raising pace, these guys and girls are locked in constant competition over who has the best bits of kit.
Another type of skier you are likely to bump into (not literally we hope, keep your eyes on the slopes), are the glamorous people; decked out in the latest trends and sporting the most-up-to-date accessories, you won't miss these colourful characters.
Thought you'd seen it all? Think again. One of the latest trends to hit the slopes is retro; fans of this style will be easily visible, wearing the best the 80s had to offer (or even full Lycra in a shocking shade of pink).
Next, you might come across the casual skier. Usually to be found wearing the basics (after all there's no point buying all the kit if you only go once every couple of years), this type of person will pair their salopettes with some knitwear or a functional jumper.
Families also have their own distinct style, with kids maybe wearing matching ski suits, and parents carrying all the essentials in a backpack or two. And what if you're travelling with your family? Have you ever thought to take the whole tribe to the snow instead of waiting for it to come to you?
There is no denying it, when those first few snowflakes fall, the child inside you starts to jump around in excitement. If you have children, you'll probably share this excitement as you watch that white fluffy stuff fall from the sky and turn our fields and roads into winter wonderlands.
Family ski holidays are becoming ever more popular with each passing season, and there's no reason why they can't be as stylish as a couples holiday (or an adults-only trip with friends). It's a fact that the kids enjoy the snow just as much as they enjoy the sea and sand.
If you feel the same, why not book the family's accommodation at one of a huge selection of stylish ski chalets dotted around Europe and Canada? You can find some great deals online, and it doesn't matter whether your kids are four or 14, you will be able to find something suitable at a few clicks of the mouse.
Many seasoned British skiers choose ski resorts in France or Spain, for the appeal of a short travelling distance. On the other hand, luxury resorts in Italy, Canada or even Finland may take your fancy. All of these locations offer breath-taking views with surrounding towns and villages to accommodate you if you choose to take a break from the slopes.
Finland is one ski destination that could prove to be a major hit if you're holidaying with children. You're a lot closer to Father Christmas there, so who knows if you'll bump into him and Rudolph while skiing down a mountain? Alternatively, the more adventurous among you may be taken with the idea of skiing under the midnight sun (in Norway's most northern reaches).
Switzerland has always been the most recognisable skiing destination in Europe. It's full of style and class, boasting luxury chalets and hotels, and even some romantic bars and restaurants nearby.
So, the next time you're thinking of booking a ski holiday, add a touch of class, a dash of style; kit yourself out in some new gear and head out on the snow.
